As much as I love classic D.C. architecture, flying down to sunny Miami to photograph this wedding was one of my 2016 wedding season highlights! Getting to visit some of my favorite cities (and explore new ones) is one of my favorite perks of being a destination wedding photographer. Elyse first contacted me after her childhood friend (and very talented wedding photographer) connected us and asked if I would be interested in coming to Miami to photograph her November wedding. Miami during a blah month, a sweet bride and the most stunning church I’ve seen in a while all had me practically shouting YES though my computer screen. Luckily, Elyse (and her fiance Todor) turned out to be even nicer in person than she sounded on the phone!
Fun fact about me: I lived in Miami for a few months right after grad school as I was trying to “find myself.” I did some non-profit work and ate way too much Cuban fit and it was so fun to see old friends (looking at you Palacio de los Jugos) and show Ben some of my favorite parts of the city.
Elyse and Todor’s wedding day kicked off with a few getting ready photos at Plymouth Congregational Church, the very same church where Elyse’s parents got married decades ago! I can see why it’s become something of a family favorite; The old stone and ivy at this church captured my photographer’s heart…I was in heaven! We only had about 20 minutes for getting ready photos before moving into the first look in a tucked away little courtyard. Elyse looked absolutely stunning in her layered tulle wedding dress and it was so fun to capture Todor’s reaction to seeing his bride for the first time on their wedding day.
Elyse’s grandfather gave a wonderful sermon at their ceremony and afterwards we raced against the setting sun to capture some of my favorite portraits ever against the backdrop of the Plymouth Congregational Church. I was so glad we were able to fit in so many portraits before we lost the natural light! After that it was on to the Mayfair Hotel in Coconut Grove for a night of celebrating.
And celebrate they did! Todor and his family are from Macedonia and Elyse and Todor incorporated some special cultural dancing elements into their wedding – including their first dance! A live band brought the house down and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a crowd dance so hard at a wedding for such an extended period of time!
Elyse and Todor – it was an honor capturing your wedding and getting to know you better on your special day. I hope you’ll treasure these photos forever.
